I can't remember. I remember being directly influenced by something... maybe something from Jillian Tamaki's Sketchbook? She had a bunch of watercolor sketches with sumi ink floated in like that a month or two back.

If you've never soldered anything ever before, then I recommend starting with the basic Little Gem design, as it doesn't have any delicate transistors to solder, and is a great project to learn the basics. If you've got some experience with a solder gun, go straight for the Ruby. It's still a very simple design, but it sounds much better. Have fun!

I've been searching around the internet for different homemade amps and such, and this is probably the best I've come across! I am looking into building some amps for myself, but as of yet I haven't done any work like this. Do you think this kind of project is too difficult for a beginner, and I should start with a smaller amp first?

The switch in this one is a SPST (Single Pole, Single Throw). It only has two contacts. I ran a lead from the positive pole on the battery to one contact, and from the positive connection on the circuit board to the other contact. Nice and simple.

Very interesting. Do you have a drawing or schematic? I'm able to make sense of most of your description, but I'm not too clear on some of your tweaks, and it sounds like you have a good version there. I'm sure the guys at runoffgroove.com would be interested in your mods as well.
